Can you handle being a mind reading superhero?
I saw a survey of superpowers recently. The survey included a short list of powers and all were a single specialized power rather than a combination of powers like those held by Superman. Kind of like the lame mutant powers I wrote about a few months ago, except these powers could have more legitimate super uses.
The top choice for superhero powers was the ability to read minds. This beat out other powers like super strength and invisibility. I thought that an interesting choice, and here’s why:
I thing most people are unable to handle the superpower of mind reading.
To read a mind, means that you can see all their thoughts. You undoubtedly get the full truth about what this individual thinks. Not only do you see what they think about other things, you get to see what they think about YOU. Are you ready for the truth of how others perceive you? Likely you’re not.
Think about it, knowing what everyone around you actually thinks about you. A full unabashed review of yourself, by everyone you meet. I bet it would be an eye opening to say the least. I’m sure you’ll get a few positives, but on top of those, you’ll get a full review of every little bad habit, every negative trait, and each and every thing that everyone dislikes about you.
Reminds me of the famous movie line, “You can’t handle the truth.”
Actually, it’s not all truth though. Much of it will be opinion based on an individual’s limited knowledge of you. Each individual will have varying opinions, but believe me, many of them are negative. I’ve talked before about positive people living in a negative world, here and here. Even great people are ridiculed for the selfish pleasures of negative people.
So, you have your new found power of mind reading. What should you do? Well, besides the obvious super hero stuff like finding criminals and uncovering evils schemes.
Don’t worry what others think of you.
This is the first thing you will have to work out with your new found power. In fact, it’s a great thing to work out NOW. Only you know the whole story of you, nobody else is able to know the whole story. People often judge too quickly, and typically without knowing the full story. I’m not sure if that’s human nature or if it’s conditioned by society. In any case, realize that you are the only one that knows you fully, and you are the only one that understands everything you do. And without a full knowledge of you, nobody has a right to analyze you or your doings.
Also know that if somebody has a foul opinion of you, that is typically a reflection on the other person. Pay attention next time someone treats you poorly, and then step back and observe. Does the other person show traits of the thing they dislike so much? I bet they do. The rude criticize the rude. The jealous are jealous of the jealous. Most times negative comments are a reflection of the commenter.
Take a look at yourself and find things to improve.
With a mind reading ability, you have a wonderful tool to seek self improvement. Listen to the thoughts of others and see if there is any truth to their thoughts. Find things in yourself that could be improved. Even without this superpower, you can listen to others and look within yourself. Nobody is perfect and we all have some improvements to be made. You really don’t need a mind reading ability to find these things. Just pay attention to your thoughts and actions throughout the day, and see where you could make improvements.
Head to Vegas
No, scratch that; everyone knows it’s unethical to use your super powers to cheat the system. Anyone that can read minds has great potential to earn a living by more respectable means.
Look for the positive in the world and in others
With your mind reading ability, or without it as a normal human, you should learn to see the positive in everything. Oh, it’s so cliche, but I have to say it… “See the glass as half full.” The world is truly a wonderful place. Just being here existing in a physical world where we can feel and touch is really fantastic. Most of us have access to good food, clean water, and shelter. Everything else is just icing on the cake. We all have our down days sometimes, but the more you look to the positive, the easier it gets.
