We seem to have a mix of people around here. Some make New Year’s resolutions and others don’t. I’m one of those that don’t. The way I see it, if I choose to set goals, then I’ll just do it. I don’t see a need to tie a goal to the new year. I also find an air of negativity surrounding New Year’s resolutions. It’s a very rare case indeed that someone actually follows through with a New Year’s resolution, and most consider it just fine if you don’t follow through with one. I find it a bit funny in the sense that a resolution should carry a lot of weight, being resolute or determined. But to me (and I think many others,) the word has lost its power. So, instead I just make a decision to do something, or maybe set some goals, or lay out some dreams. Whether you are making resolutions or not, I want to wish you a most joyous and happy year in 2010.
Now, on to something else. We went to Disney’s Animal Kingdom the other day. They have a great playground area there with a tower to climb, dinosaur playthings, and slides galore. You can see the play area in the picture at the top of the post. Everything there is great fun to play on, with one exception. These “devices of torture” that they call slides. Everyone knows that plastic slides create a lot of static electricity when rapidly moving across the plastic. Given that fact, what would be the best method of attaching pieces of the slide together and holding it in place? Well apparently the sadistic slide builders figured metal bolts would work well. Thus creating an electrocution chamber where kids and adults alike get a good jolt every time they pass over a metal bolt on their joyous journey down the slide. I’m not talking little jolts here, I’m talking those with pacemakers may want to find a different ride. One jolt went through the side of my shoe. An electric shock so great as to penetrate the side of my shoe! I don’t know, maybe it’s just the adults that get shocked; my daughter didn’t seem to notice, or maybe she was distracted by the fun. Here is a picture of me extracting myself from the electrocution chamber of doom. I even managed to force a smile for the camera.
I’d like to give everyone a small laugh at my own expense. You see, I seem to have an innate ability to take pictures with the silliest or oddest things in the background. Seems like every time a take a picture there is a light pole or a tree in the background that looks as though it’s coming straight out the top of someone’s head. I guess I’m too busy focusing on the subject of the picture, and I fail to pay attention to the surroundings. Well, this time I did it to myself. While at Disney’s Animal Kingdom the other day, we saw their Christma s tree adorned with animal related ornaments. It’s a really odd tree actually, full of different animal heads. I took a few pictures of my wife and my daughter by the tree, and then a passerby offered to take a picture so I could get in it too. We were reviewing the pictures on the camera and having a good laugh at the giraffe heads and wicker baskets in the tree. Then in one of the pictures that I took, I noticed a lion head that was missing in the passerby’s photo.
Here’s the one I took. Notice the lion’s head.
And here’s the one the passerby took.
You probably guessed where this was headed. It’s me with a lion’s mane and ears.
Have a happy New Year, and remember to have fun even when it hurts and have a good laugh at your own expense.

I agree how “resolution” has lost all its bite. It’s sad that people aren’t taking it more seriously. Oh well.

Yep, it is sad indeed. I think part of the problem is that people make resolutions that are not practical, and thus destined to fail. That can really take bite out of a resolution.

I had a shocking year in 2009. Kept getting electric shocks when I got out of my car then someone told me I needed to earth myself by putting my foot on the ground before touching the metal door. Wierd! I wrote a post of Lifehack about new year’s resolutions. I agree. It’s not the time that’s important but doing it at some point. Have a roaring 2010:)

Annabel, that’s a good tip. I’ll try it for the car, but my legs are long enough to reach the ground from the top of the slide.

You know I seriously think that some people are just a lot more electrically… charged(?) than others. I swear, every time I get out of a car when it’s cool and dry, I get shocked shutting the door. No one else seems to. It’s gotten to where I slap the door frame to grab it. For some reason this works and no shock.
Will try to hammer out a post soon.
Do you think it differs from person to person?
Sorry I have been MIA lately. Was gone out of town and have been harried. (Not hairy)

Krissa, I’ve thought that also, I seem to get shocked quite a bit. Maybe you can try Annabel’s suggestion of touching the ground before touching the door.

I get electric shocks all the time, too, on those plastic structures, and my son (3 yr old) is always unscathed.
Beautiful family you’ve got there, Eric. Lion’s mane and all.
I was thinking about any New Year’s resolutions I might want to have several weeks ago and I was reminded of all the times I failed myself. The times that I stick with any resolution aren’t time-specific at all; more because I was ready in October or really motivated in July. Now, I seem to do more seasonal and monthly resolutions and I stick with them which logically make me a happier person.
Happy new year to you!

Belinda, Maybe kids are immune to static electricity. Or more likely just having to much fun to worry about it. I like the monthly and seasonal resolutions. Those seem to work better for me also.

Hi Eric – I’m thinking you should audition for the Lion King! Very fun – the lion’s mane looks good on you. As far as resolutions go, I’m not much for them. I do appreciate the notion of a clean slate, fresh start, all that. But for me that’s an inner feeling more than a particular goal.

Patty, the Lion King is one of my favorite movies. Not in my top 6, but definitely one of my favorite animated movies.
Funny you mention the clean slate feeling, I just went for the clean slate on my new post, wiping the slate clean so I can focus on some new books.
