Book Review Roundup

I think I have too many books to read.  I’ve started five or six different books in the last month or so. I guess the ADD kicks in and I keep moving from book to book.  After finishing “Questions from Earth, Answers from Heaven” and “The Silva Mind Control Method” I took them back to the library.  Then my birthday came around and I got a few books.  I made it most of the way through “What Color Is Your Parachute,” and then Christmas arrived and I got a few more books.  Oh, and I picked up one at the used book store.  I figure it’s time for a little book clean up here on my blog.  I’m going to give some reviews of these recent books and update “My Current Reading List” on the sidebar.  Maybe a little cleaning is just what the doctor ordered to get me focused into one or two books so I can actually make some progress.

I finished “Questions from Earth, Answers from Heaven” back in October.  In my post on Intuition, I mentioned that I had read several books on the topic, and that the power in most of these books was the examples and stories provided.  This book fits that description perfectly.  The author, Char Margolis, is a well know spiritual intuitive.  She works through her intuition to contact and get answers from the spirit realm.  The book covered some examples of this, but it covered many more examples of people she has known and their experiences with intuition.  The book was a good read, and was full of examples.  I find it useful to read books of a spiritual nature to keep me motivated in my quest for inner knowledge.  This book worked well for this, it kept me thinking and questioning.  I’m not sure it succeeded at actually teaching how to develop your own intuition.  It does an ok job at this, but for me, the power was in the examples.  Overall, it was a great library find.

Next up was another library book that I checked out at the same time as Questions from Earth.  This one was “The Silva Mind Control Method.”  I felt a little rushed getting through this book as I had kept renewing it and was running out of renewal periods.  I’m actually a little surprised that my local town library has a good selection of books on metaphysics, new age, and spirituality.  Once I get through the bunch I have now, I’ll surely head back and check out some more.  The copy of “The Silva Mind Control Method” that I checked out had been published in the 1970s.  This Silva method has been around for a long time, and I found the book to be very interesting.  Before reading it, I thought it was about controlling the minds of others, kind of like “Mind Control Marketing.”  I was way off; it’s actually about controlling your own mind.  You are shown how to access memories, increase intelligence, improve your memory, and unlock the power of your mind.  The basis for doing this is a type of active meditation.  Through much of the book, Silva spent time hyping his class that teaches this Silva Method.  The class actually sounds really great; it sounds like a combination class and meditation retreat.  The best thing I took away from this book was his method of entering a meditative state.  It was one in which you count down from 100.  I’d heard of this method before, but never really tried it.  It worked well for me, as the counting backwards is just enough of a challenge to keep the mind attentive, yet it’s repetitive enough to allow me to enter a good meditative state.  Over all it was a good book and I was able to take several items from the book and put them into practice.

Last on my list is a book I received for my birthday: “What Color Is Your Parachute.”  This is book about careers and job searching.  The first half of the book focuses on job hunting in today’s tough job market.  This book is updated every year, so the information stays very current.  Even so, I found that much of the information provided I had already known or found out on my own.  Some of the info seemed more suited to those who are not familiar with all the job search resources available on the Internet.  Being in the computer field, I was already familiar with these.  The second half of the book had a good method for finding a career to be passionate about.  Or rather, it helps you identify your passions, and then try to work those into a job or career.  The technique looked very promising, but I haven’t yet taken the time to go through the process.  If I get around to actually trying the techniques, I’ll report back with my findings.  It was a good book, and the fact that it’s updated every year makes it a great resource for anyone that finds themselves unemployed.

That gets me up to date on my reading list, and I’ve updated my side bar list.  The book that looks the most promising right now is “The Vortex.”  It’s about the law of attraction and relationships.  It grabbed my attention from the first paragraph, which I’ll share with you in my next blog.

Thanks Annabel, I write a post about having too many books to read and you recommend another one for me to pick up. Ok, I added it to my Amazon wish list, so I’ll pick it up when I get through my current stack. :)

Hi Eric – I enjoyed the book reviews, especially the Silva Method. I must admit I’ve heard of it and been somewhat creeped out by the words “mind control.” Like, if it’s something you do to others, it sounds manipulative; or if it’s something you do to yourself, it sounds a bit painful! Just goes to show the power that words have over me, and that I should not assume. Thanks for that.

Patty, that’s kind of what I thought at first too. But after reading it, it made more sense. It’s simply taking control of your own mind. I tried some of the techniques and can say that there was no pain involved.
