Finding New Perspective – An Enchanted Walkabout

by Eric Watermolen on March 22, 2010

During my period of unemployment, I tried to find things to do that were inexpensive or free. We did lots of things like exploring local parks, playing at the beach, and wandering around the zoo. That was all great, but I still had quite a bit of free time. I started exploring some Meet Up groups on Meetup.com. I was amazed at the number of groups I found. Groups of any interested I could imagine. As I was exploring the Meetup site, I stumbled across an interesting group. It was called Enchanted Walkabout.

I’ve always been fascinated by the idea of a walkabout. The idea of wandering around exploring all there is to see has always interested me. But this walkabout was different. It was an Enchanted Walkabout. Sounds mysterious and fascinating, so I wondered what made it enchanted. Well, this walkabout was to observe the world of fairies, orbs, and other worldly beings. I’d been interested in Orb photos, where these mysterious little balls of light show up in pictures. I also liked what I knew about fairies, having a young daughter who was very much into Tinkerbell. So I figured what the heck, let’s go see what this is all about.

Entering a Mysterious World

The Walkabout was being held in a very beautiful local park. One that was well known for having a wonderful variety of plants. We arrived a few minutes early and sat in the car to await the arrival of our Walkabout guide. We figured waiting in the car was the safest option in case we changed our minds and decided to opt for a quick getaway. After a short wait the guide arrived, as did a few other walkabouters. We walked over to the picnic table where the group was meeting.

The guide and his wife were very friendly and welcomed everyone happily and openly. They had several photo albums full of pictures they had taken. Photos of orbs, fairies, and all manner of mystical things. Now when I say they had pictures of these things, they had pictures that very much resembled these things. I’m not sure if these beings are real or not, but in order to participate in an event of this type, I felt a certain suspension of belief would be helpful. So, I stayed open minded and looked at some really wonderful pictures. I didn’t require much imagination to see some of the things our guide described in these photos.

Suspend Belief and Begin the Enchanted Walkabout

After a few minutes looking at these photo albums, it was time to start the Walkabout. I was excited as I approached the event with a child-like curiosity. I tried to imagine myself as a child using my imagination to see all the wonderful things that grownups miss as they apply their fancy logic to every situation. This situation didn’t require logic, but rather a child-like fascination.

We saw fairy castles.

Faces in the trees.

Tree Face

A phallic tree (I made that one up, it wasn’t really part of the tour)

Happy Tree

A king and queen gnome and their kingdom.

Here’s me sitting on a fairy throne.

And a tree elf in a funny hat.

I had loads of fun exploring the park from a completely new perspective. I spent the morning looking at things as I never have before. It was an incredibly rewarding experience to suspend belief and throw all my preconceived ideas out the window for a couple of hours.

I sometimes think that adults don’t take enough time to use their imagination.  Because of this, I relished the idea of embracing it full tilt and letting it take me to a new world.  A world of faries and gnomes.  Do you ever take the chance to let your imagination run free?  I’d love to hear from you in the comments section.

Delicious journey my friend, thank you for sharing this with us.
Increased awareness is very much an acquisition of good force. Exercises like this one are always in the artist’s heart. As for the “phallic”
I seem to see a lot of these too… They just keep (excuse the pun) popping up everywhere… ;0))

Smiling a big smile right now! Why are there no magic, fairy dust, enchanted walkabout Meetups in my town? This sure beats the Casino and Bus Trip Lover’s Meetup (I kid you not). And why am I not surprised that both you and Eso find phallic significance in the “Happy Tree?” Hmmm. Although I do have to admit I have a thing for Redwood trees. Great post, Eric.

Patty, I think you are far to young for the Casino and Bus Trip Lover’s Meetup. I picture a bus full of little old ladies with change purses full of nickels. As far as the happy tree, I just call ‘em like I see ‘em.

Unfortunately this Meetup group dissolved not long after I participated in the enchanted walkabout. I think I learned enough though where I can have my own enchanted walkabouts. It really was a fun experience.

I send a lot of time outside with my own littles one (fun and cheap way to pass the time).

It truly is amazing to see the world through a little ones eyes or just adults willing to suspend disbelief for a few hours.

Sounds like a very interesting meetup.

Scarlett, it was definitely a good way to spend a morning. Spending time outside with the little ones is a fantastic way to pass the time. My daughter loves playing outside more than any other activity. Thanks for dropping by.

Oh, that was fun! I used to love walking in the woods and find all sorts of neat organic things. I don’t think I ever left the house without bringing home a rock in my pocket. And always a wonderful one!
You know it’s been ages since I did it as well. I will try to find another opportunity to do so again.
