Today I am very happy to review a book written by my friend Josh Hanagarne aka the World’s Strongest Librarian. If you’ve visited his blog, you’ll know that he’s a talented writer. He makes you feel at home from your very first visit. A couple months back he self published his very first book, “The Knot.”
The Knot is an adventure story trailing the lives of two old men, a spunky young heroine of sorts, a little girl with a ferocious unicorn, a frog named Alger, and a number of other very odd and interesting individuals. Even a famous movie action hero makes an appearance. I was a little surprised at the size of the cast actually. There are a lot of people in this book, but Josh does a good job of introducing them all, so I never had trouble deciphering one from the other.
The Knot was quite a bit larger than I expected, weighing in at 452 pages. It turns out the length is exactly right for the telling of this tale. It reads easy, much like a young adult fiction. Yet some of the content would be a little edgy for the young adult crowd. I can already picture it getting banned from the school reading list, assuming the school types frown upon dirty old men trying to get some action.
To me, the core of the book is about relationships. A town full of people, gradually interacting with one another. Each person starting out isolated and gradually merging their story into the collective. The first chapter starts with a bang. From there emotion, suspense, and action roll up and down throughout the book. It’s been a while since I’ve read a good bit of fiction, and I found it hard to put down.
I’m trying to not give too much away as I hate spoilers. I really enjoyed this book. I liked the well developed cast of characters and the multitude of adventures. Everyone in this book seems to be on their own little quest. It’s really quite an adventure.
I’m not sure how much more I can say without spoiling anything. Typically after I read a book, I have no desire to see the movie version. You know, the book is always better than the movie. That’s probably the case here also, but with all the action and adventure in this book, I think I’d really like to see the movie version of this book.
Josh cleverly made the first chapter available for free on his website. After reading the first chapter I had to have more. Take a look and I think you’ll want more too. After you get hooked, you can buy it here.
