Friday afternoon was beautiful here. It was sunny and warm, and a perfect day to drop the top on the Jeep. I stopped to get gas on the way home from work, and while filling the tank, I zipped out the windows, rolled up the back window, and lowered the top. The fresh air and warm weather made for a great ride home.
On the way home, as I was driving through downtown, I caught the scent of perfume. I thought it a little odd, since I’m sitting in traffic and the usual smells are nearer exhaust fumes than perfume. I looked around looking for a source. Driving with the top down, I’m constantly amazed at what I smell (usually good smells.) It’s something the closed in, air conditioned drivers don’t get the opportunity to experience.
Often the pleasant scent comes from road side flowers. This time however, I was passing through the pavement and concrete covered downtown area, in the middle of an interstate highway. Not a flower in sight. The other odd thing about this perfume scent was that it stuck with me for a while, around 10 minutes. The scents of flowers usually pass more quickly. So I had this mysterious visit from a perfumed scent on my drive home. That was the last I thought of it until later that night.
My wife and I were chatting after dinner. I mentioned the perfume scent on the way home. She gave me a funny look… and then told me about the perfume scent she smelled at exactly the same time. She was at home, 20 miles from my perfume experience, sitting by the pool. She smelled a strong perfume scent and thought it odd. Her only conclusion was that maybe a neighbor went overboard with some spray perfume, but she found that improbable. She even called our daughter over to smell it. Then after about 10 minutes the scent faded and she continued about her day.
I have no idea what caused this mysterious perfume scent. Perhaps it was some sort of supernatural message, just to let us know that someone is keeping an eye on us. Just to let us know we’re not alone. Or maybe there is a more Earthly reason. I don’t really have the answer, but it was definitely an interesting experience.

I would have to assume the above quote. From my research, they want you to know that they are there. Protecting, observing, meddling or something. That is definitely a cool experience, though. Thanks for sharing.

Ali, It was a cool experience. I definitely like to think it was a message from beyond our realm. I really don’t have any other explanation with timing of both of us smelling the scent at the exact same time, miles apart, plus that it was so strong that both of us took notice of it.
Your post struck a chord with me today…more than usual. You see, when my husban’d grandmother died several years ago, her daughter and grandaughter went to her home a few days after. Upon opening the door, they were both surprised by a very strong smell of Easter lilies (the granny’s favorite flower). The house had been shut up for several days and there wasn’t a single flower in the whole place. Both daughter and grandaughter said they experienced a feeling of peace and a joy in their hearts. After a little while, the smell disappeared as easily as it had come. To this day, they have no other reasoning of it, other than possibly being a message of love – like you describe above. Patricia, that is a very cool story. The sense of smell has such strong ties to memory. Some of my strongest and favorite memories are tied to smell. I can see why that would be a good way for those that have passed on to communicate with us.

Reading this at 4.09am nearly gave me goosebumps but then again I am have an inclination to wander to sites such as this – it makes my mind giggle as it expands with a string of buzzing thoughts.
If I may ask, what kind of scent was it that the both your noses picked up? Who knows, it might just be a universal sort of scent that everyone across the world has been sniffing at odd times? Haha. =)

Shanaz, it is a little spooky to read about things like that in the middle of the night.
Neither of us could identify the scent other than it smelled like perfume. We’re not big perfume or cologne wearers, so I couldn’t identify it any more than that. It caught my attention because it didn’t smell like flowers, it was definitely more perfume like.
A universal scent is an interesting idea. Maybe it was the smell of happiness. We were both feeling pretty good; me enjoying the top down in the Jeep, and my wife sitting by the pool.
I don’t know about you guys, but I had that similar experience during my brother’s death, 6 years ago. He was an avid fan of aspen cologne and during his wake up to his 40 days, I kept on smelling this scent everywhere I go! May it be to the university, mall, friend’s house, street, on at our own home… But it just kinda faded away as more days, months and years passed by…
Maybe in your case, it is different. It may be true that it is the universal scent of bliss, how fortunate of you to have experienced that. Or who knows, maybe it is the scent of your guardian angel or protector of the sort? hehe.. Trying to tell you that he/she/ they are keeping you safe..

I was looking the internet for this subject after I caught a strong scent of flowers, like jasmine while on the Web on Thanksgiving night 11/15/2010 very late near midnight. It was a familiar flower smell ,but I have no flowers in my apartment and my nose was really stuffy from a cold. I dont understand how I could smell that . and it passed by so fast, I looked around my studio and all I felt was a bit of goosebumps but not real strong, just kinda strange almost like a warm feeling, not negative…
But in my opinion, I felt a bit like something passed by or someone ???
I cannot figure this out or explain….
It’s definitely an interesting experience. I find it fascinating that you got the scent even with a stuffy nose. I don’t know the actual cause, but I like to think that it’s a subtle message from someone looking over us. Thanks for sharing your experience.
I wish to share my experience with you. Indeed I came to look at this website and subject matter simply because day before yesterday I got this very nice and natural smell from I don’t know where at around three o’clock in the morning. It was so intense and something that i have not really experienced before – a combination of scented flowers. Its really difficult to understand what this all means.
