That’s what my four year old daughter asked as we were flipping through the channels and came across a PBS show that had some seagulls frolicking in the ocean.
“Is that the baby birds in the oil?”
It wasn’t baby bird covered in oil, but it made me sad that this question would cross the mind of my sweet little four year old daughter. It made me sad that we live in a world where carelessness and gross negligence could cause such a humongous environmental disaster.
I have tried to avoid bringing this topic to Eden Journal. It’s been on my mind a lot, since this oil is beginning to wash up on the shores of my state. Rather than rant about how unbelievable it is to me that something like this could happen, I’m going to try to stay positive. I’m going to hope that this oil will eventually break down and that the earth will clean itself. I’m going to focus on the long term and hope that in five or ten years we won’t see any remnants of the oil. I’m going to hope that most of the sea life will flee the huge clouds of oil floating beneath the surface. I’m going to hope that as a society we can find a viable and renewable replacement to fossil fuels. Join me in my hope and lets try to focus on the positive.

I am so upset about this whole disaster. I live on The Gulf Coast and while it hasn’t reached my area yet, I live with the dread of knowing it’s coming. It has already effected so many people in the community in so many different devastating ways. Like the lady in Kemah, Texas that owns an oyster business. She paid a whole lot of money, (I have actually forgotten how much now), for a brand new state of the art “oyster machine”, that cleans and shucks them very fast instead of doing it by hand. Of course she purchased this before the disaster. Now, there simply are NO oysters. Period. It sits there doing nothing and she is going out of business and bankruptcy looms.
That is just one little story among thousands and thousands….

Oh, and the picture of the baby bird breaks my heart.

Hey Krissa,
Yep, the whole thing is heartbreaking. It’s too bad that we humans can’t be more aware of the world around us.
It breaks my heart too, what’s going to happen now. I’m not sure how they’re going to stop the spreading oil but I hope that they are on a course to seriously heal the damage that’s been done.

Hi My Reverie,
I hope they are on course to heal the damage as well. I know it’s going to be a big effort. On the plus side, there are a lot of people willing the help.
Eric,
I’m going to hope that the masses magnetize together and take back our planet. I’m going to hope that this change and shift in consciousness will dissolve companies like BP.
It truly is sad but we can not control it. What we can do is control our spending dollars. We, as people, need to make sure we spend our “money” with entities that are not selfish enough to sacrifice lives for monetary gain.
My best wishes to you and yours….

Ali,
I would love to see a shift in consciousness; I think it’s under way, let’s hope it continues on the right track.
Right on, let’s take our planet back. I do my best to spend with good entities, although it’s sometimes hard to tell the good from the bad, especially when the money works it’s way down the supply chain. Even so, I’m doing my best.
