There’s a Turd in my Nest

There's a turd in my nest

by Eric Watermolen on July 8, 2010

A family of squirrels live in a tree,
Along with some birds and bubbly bee.

A Mother squirrel looks over this crew.
Caring for her tree is all that she knew.

Each squirrel and bird has a nest of their own.
They live there as children until they are grown.

In the beginning they took great care of their nest.
In a tree full of life that’s really quite best.

But as time went on, they began to grow careless.
And in all honesty they really did care less.

They left half eaten acorns scattered about.
Some for so long they started to sprout.

They left trash in their nests, they didn’t recycle or reuse.
“Why should we” they thought, “There’s nothing to lose.”

They consume all they want full of great greed.
“We have an endless supply of all that we need.”

They thought this to be true but mother squirrel new better.
She tried to convince them in a speech and a letter.

She talked and she preached, she led by example.
But try as she might they continued to trample.

The good tree that provided life for each one
was slowly dying, but what could be done?

The mother squirrel was concerned about the health of her dear tree.
But none cared, not the birds or the squirrels or even the bee.

They continued to live their lavish lifestyles,
Consume and dispose of trash in big piles.

One day they came home and what did they see?
A turd in each nest, how could that be?

Who would do such a thing? It made them quite mad.
To poop in the nest of another was really quite bad.

Would they understand the lesson their mother was teaching,
You have to respect your surroundings, it’s what she’d been preaching.

They had but one tree to live and to play.
I think they learned their lesson that day.

You must respect the world you live in.
Or one day the Mother Earth may happen to shit in
the home you inhabit, the only you live in.

We have only one planet to live and to love.
Now is the time to rise up above
and to take care of all that you are not innocent of.

Love and Respect your planet, your neighbors, and yourself.

I get it. Hopefully, the people that abuse this great Earth will get it. I like how you used the animals to tell your tale of betrayal. It’s so much easier to make light of a horrific situation in a playful, joking manner. You definitely accomplished that.

Thanks for sharing your words with us, Eric.

Hello Eric,

What a great job you’ve done with this poem. You speak of a an issue that is crucial for us to understand, and to act upon, and you’ve done it with a touch of humor1 Very good job!

I appreciate what you’ve done here, thank you.

Hi Keith,
We all have to share this little planet of ours. I hope more people can take some time to think about their planet, their neighbors, and themselves. Even small changes can make a difference.

Hi Eric,

Funny isn’t it? I was just responding to your kind comment in my blog and then came to visit you and found this post basically talking about the same concept that my last post, of course in a different way. I suck at writing poetry!

This poem is so simple yet so true and precise to the point, I like it, great work!

Very cool Raul, I love synchronicity. I’m not normally much of a poet, but I’ve been reading a lot of Dr. Seuss lately, and I think some of it sunk into my brain. :)

Eric,

There is very powerful message here, I hope all of us get it and make it better as you said, we got only one world and one life to maintain it. I was reading a story to my preschooler called “giving tree”, which has a great message.

We are doing my little part by composting, using cloth napkins, and cloth bags and little plastic as much possible, recycle, reuse has its benefit, did you write this poem?

Preeti, Yes, I did write this poem. I vaguely recall The Giving Tree, I’ll have to see if they have it at our library. Sounds like you and your family are leading by example, and that is fantastic. Thanks for being a good neighbor and a friend to our planet.

Eric: Nice message and post. It really drove home the message of the importance of not getting so caught up with ourselves and what we want that we neglect and overlook the things and people around us. Cute poem. I really enjoyed reading it.
